Apple Crumble And An Easy Guide To Making At Home

Apple crumble

What Is Apple Crumble?

Apple crumble is a dessert that is an alternate for apple pie. The basic process of apple crumble is to make an apple puree and cover it with flour crumbles made out of butter, sugar, and flour, and then bake them in the oven for 10-15 minutes until golden brown. It is a sweet and sour apple dessert and it is an easy way out from making a hardcore level dessert for your family and it tastes just as good as them.

It is a British dessert that gained its popularity during WWII and still is a favorite dish among the people. Because the process is pretty easy and literally anyone can cook it if they have an oven. It doesn’t require any pastry ingredients and can be made with your everyday used ingredients.

Which Apples Are Best For Baking?

Jonagold:- Tart with a honeyed sweetness.
Honeycrisp:- Its shatteringly crisp texture is guaranteed to hold firm.
Braeburn:- This superbly crisp apple has a concentrated taste and bakes up juicy but not mushy.
Mutsu:- Also known as Crispin, this firm-fleshed, less tart option is similar in flavor to a Golden Delicious.
Winesap:- Intensely flavored with deep cidery notes, these apples resist breaking down during cooking and deliver great complexity to baked goods.
Pink Lady (or Cripps Pink):- Balanced between sweet, tart, and tannic notes.

Guide To Make Apple Crumble

Making The Apple Puree

The apple puree is the base of the recipe and you have to make sure it’s soft and moist. First, you have to make the caramel. In order to make the caramel take a baking tray, heat it a little, and spread 6 tbsp of caster sugar/normal sugar, one pinch of cinnamon powder, one vanilla pods seed/1 tsp of vanilla extract, and cook them in medium heat until the sugar gets caramelized.

Add the grated apples. After 2 minutes lower the heat and add another 3 cubed apples(with skin on) along with 1 lemon skin zest and half lemon juice. Cook them for a minute and turn the gas off. Your puree is ready.

Preparing The Crumble

The crumble for your apple crumble/ crisp must be dry and fresh. Try to make it right after the puree and use it immediately. In order to make the perfect crumble take 100g plain flour, 2 tbsp demerara sugar/normal sugar, 50g chilled butter, a pinch of ground cinnamon, 4tbsp of granola/muesli in a mixing bowl and mix them until they are all mixed up. Your crumble is ready.

Finishing The Apple Crumble

Finally spread the crumbles on top of the puree evenly and turn on the heat until the caramel starts bubbling. When the caramel starts bubbling put the tray in the oven at 200° C or 392° F for 15minutes until golden brown. You can serve the apple crumble hot or cold however you want. It tastes better on its own. But you can serve it with a dollop of whipped cream or sour cream. My personal recommendation is to serve it with a scoop of vanilla ice-cream.

1. Add some cranberry with the cubed apples to get a different flavor.
2. After adding sugar, cinnamon on the pan swell it, don’t stir it.
3. Add the chopped apples after the sugar goes brown. Or it will burn.
4. Before freezing it make sure to cool down to room temperature.
5. Try with different apples and other fruits for various flavors. Make sure to add savory flavored fruits in order to get the original flavor.

Can You Freeze Apple Crumble?

Yes, you can freeze your apple crumble. Baked or unbaked however you like you can freeze it after getting to room temperature. For best results, first, bake the pie and then place it uncovered at room temperature. After 2 hours wrap the pie tightly or, place it in a plastic freezer bag and place it back in the freezer. Frozen, baked fruit pies will keep up to 4 months.

If you don’t like your crumble cold then reheat it. Just take it out of the freezer. Pre-heat the oven at 350° F or 176° C and bake it for at least 30minutes. Add some butter on top of it before baking just to keep the top moist because baking it will make the top layer dry for sure.

The best way to freeze is to freeze it unbaked. After preparing the apple crumble keep it at room temperature. After that wrap it around with aluminum foil or plastic wrap. Don’t wrap it tightly, make sure to keep some space, and then wrap it. Put it in the freezer therefore it will keep it nice and moist.

Before cooking it just put it out of the freezer and wait till it gets to room temperature. And then bake it in a pre-heated oven at 200° C or 392° F for 15 minutes.

Thaw the unbaked or baked frozen apple crumble in the refrigerator overnight in order to preserve it. Once it’s thawed, you can bake it according to your original recipe or reheat it at 350 degrees Fahrenheit until it’s warm. The reheating process should take about 30 minutes.

Is it good for you?

This recipe contains a lot of sugar, at least 2 tbsp per serving. 2tbsp is around 25 grams while it is a lot of sugar for one person in only a pie piece. So if you’re gonna consume this amount of sugar you better be willing to burn the calories that you are getting in too. And if you combine all the ingredients together there is at least 75 g sugar per serving a grand total of around 300g.

This dessert just does not only contain a lot of sugar but also a lot of calories too. Combining all the elements around 580 g calories will be served per serving as well as a noticeable amount of carbohydrate. So if you are not willing to use these calories, there will be a lot of calories stuffed in your body.

Can You Prepare The Apple Crumble A Day Early?

Yes, you can prepare your apple crumble a day early. In case you are busy the next morning for some reason and the family requested a delicious dessert, you can save some time by making the crumble and the mixture separately.

Because if you make the whole thing and keep it in the freezer, the crumble will suck up all the juices of apple puree and it will be a soggy apple crumble. In order to premake apple crumble cook the apple puree separately and from the crumble and keep them in the freezer by wrapping around with a plastic wrap or aluminum foil.
